Interlining: Types of Interlining, Applications, Advantages.
Interlining is important for garment manufacturing as it helps to improve the appearance, shape and durability of the garment. It helps prevent the outer fabric from wrinkling or stretching and also provides structure and support to the garment. Interlining also helps hide seam allowances, giving the garment a clean and professional finish.
Mainly two types of Interlining as follows:
- Stitched interlining or non-fusible interlining.
- Fusible Interlining
Stitching is done by combining different layers of texture and habitually stitching.This types of interlining applying it to ingredients like starch improves its quality. Stitched interlining combines with the basic texture of the garment through stitching.
Use of non-fusible interlining:
Non-fusible interlining is commonly used in various garments

Fusible interlining is a layer of fabric that is attached to the wrong side of the main fabric using heat and pressure to provide support, structure and shape to the garment. This types of interlining made of different fibers such as cotton, polyester, wool or silk and can be woven or non-woven.

Woven fusible interlining

Weft-inserted fusible interlining

Water soluble fusible interlining

- Polyethylene (P.E.) coated interlining
- Polypropylene (P.P.) coated interlining

Polyethylene (P.E.) coated interlining
- PVC (Polyvinyl) coating resin is used as coating.
- PVC coated is suitable for both dry cleaning and dry.
- It is mainly used for manufacturing coat-type garments.
Polypropylene (P.P.) coated interlining
- PVC (polyvinyl acetate) resin is used as coating.
- Polyvinyl acetate coated interlining is not dry cleanable and has limited washability.
- There is a need for low pressure and temperature that is used between the skin and the distal material.
- Here, the resin is usually in the form of a continuous plasticizing coating on the base fabric.
- PVA coated fusible interlinings are rarely used in the garment manufacturing industry.
Polyethylene coated fusible interlinings:
- Here, polyethylene is used as a resin coating.
- The effect of varying resin concentration is greater resistance to dry cleaning solvents and a higher softening point with increased elasticity.
- Polyethylene coated fusible interlining is used in shirt collar, cuffs.
- The fabric attached to this type of interlining is water washable.
Polyester coated fusible interlinings:
- In case of polyester coated fusible interlining, polyester is used as a resin coating.
- Here, polyester resin is used in washable dry cleanable garments. Because polyester is less water absorbent than polyamide.
- Polyester coated fusible interlining can be used in all types of garments.
- This is called standard interlining.
- Available in the market though expensive.
Polyamide coated fusible interlinings:
- In case of polyamide coated fusible interlining, polyamide is used as a resin coating.
- Polyamide coated interlinings are widely used in dry cleaning solvents.
- High temperature fusing is done for garments washed at 60-degree temperature.
Polypropylene coated fusible interlinings:
- Polypropylene coated fusible interlinings are similar in properties to polyethylene coated interlinings.
- Relatively high temperature fusing is done here.
- The fabric which is attached with this interlining can be washed with water.
